2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vs 2027 Ram 1500: Why Silverado’s Powertrain Options Stand Out

Silver pickup truck on a rugged dirt road with a vast desert landscape under a clear sky.

Saskatchewan truck shoppers cross-shopping the 2027 Silverado 1500 and the Ram 1500 are really comparing two ways of building a powertrain lineup. Ram spreads its choices across eight configurations. Chevrolet keeps four engines, and each one has a clear job.

That clarity matters when you are matching an engine to a trailer or a work schedule. The 2027 Silverado 1500 is expected to go on sale at the end of 2026, and this guide shows which engine and which trailering technology suit which kind of driver.

Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500 Engines, Matched by Role

Each row pairs a Silverado engine with the closest Ram engine by displacement or role. Ratings are maximums and shift with cab, drivetrain and package.

Four Engines, Four Jobs

The 2.7L TurboMax is the everyday engine. It sends 350 hp and 455 lb-ft through a 10-speed automatic, with a new turbocharger, upgraded fuel injection and redesigned pistons behind those numbers. Its 2,340 lbs (1,061 kg) payload is the highest of the four, which suits job-site loads. Ram’s V6 eTorque matches that payload, but it makes 269 lb-ft against the TurboMax’s 455 lb-ft.

The 5.7L V8 is the towing V8. It makes 402 hp and 428 lb-ft and carries the Silverado’s top tow rating. Stepping up from the TurboMax adds 52 hp and 4,300 lbs (1,950 kg) of towing for a 170 lbs (77 kg) payload trade. For frequent trailer work, that is the most efficient jump in the lineup.

The 6.6L V8 is the output engine. Its 481 hp and 501 lb-ft make it the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in its class, and its 481 hp sits above the 395 hp and 470 hp of Ram’s 5.7-litre and 6.4-litre HEMI V8s. The trade is practical. Compared with the TurboMax, it adds 131 hp but only 300 lbs (136 kg) of towing, and it gives up 830 lbs (376 kg) of payload. Choose it for power, not for hauling.

The Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel is the long-haul engine. It makes 305 hp and 495 lb-ft, with smooth, quiet running and strong low-end torque for towing and long-distance driving. That torque figure is above the 469 lb-ft of Ram’s Hurricane SO, the Ram engine with the highest tow rating in its lineup. A 129 L fuel tank is available on the Duramax, as it is on both V8s, which matters on long highway runs.

Revised DEF level indicators and sealing and injector corrosion-protection updates round out the diesel’s ownership details. It is a segment-exclusive engine.

Ram answers with breadth. Its engines overlap: the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 and the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 eTorque both make 395 hp and 410 lb-ft. The Silverado’s four engines each cover a different need, so the choice is simpler. Every one pairs with a 10-speed automatic, while Ram’s configurations use eight-speed automatics.

How Output Translates to Towing and Payload

Ram’s peak output is higher. The Hurricane HO twin-turbo I6 makes 540 hp and 521 lb-ft, and the Rumble Bee SRT’s supercharged HEMI V8 reaches 777 hp. But those engines carry tow ratings of 9,480 lbs (4,300 kg) and 8,580 lbs (3,892 kg), and payload of 1,530 lbs (694 kg) and 1,140 lbs (517 kg). The Silverado’s 6.6L V8 rates 9,700 lbs (4,400 kg) for towing from a naturally aspirated V8.

The Silverado’s strongest towing ratings come from engines built for the job. The 5.7L V8 reaches 13,700 lbs (6,214 kg) and the Duramax 12,000 lbs (5,443 kg), both above the 11,530 lbs (5,230 kg) that is Ram’s highest listed figure. Horsepower leads go to Ram’s top-end engines. Rated towing and payload at every step of the Silverado lineup are where the Silverado’s engine plan pays off.

Super Cruise Trailering for Long Distances

Super Cruise brings hands-free driving to towing, with a three-year plan included. No other competitor in its class offers a hands-free driving system with trailering capability. Ram offers Hands-free Driving Assist too, but it stops short of that trailering capability.

On a long highway day, that pairs naturally with the Duramax. The diesel’s low-end torque does the pulling, and Super Cruise reduces the steering workload. Navigation, media and available trailering technologies sit on a 16.3-inch centre display, larger than the Ram’s 14.5-inch Uconnect 5 screen, with a 12.2-inch driver display beside it.

Hands-free capability and engine suitability are separate questions. Super Cruise handles the driving assistance, while the engine’s rating decides what a trailer can weigh. Maximum ratings change with trim, cab, drivetrain, package and trailer setup.

Why the Silverado 1500 Fits Saskatchewan Drivers

Black pickup truck parked on a driveway near a house surrounded by tall trees and a lakeside view.

Saskatchewan drivers haul loads and tow across long distances, and the Silverado’s engine lineup follows that pattern:

  • Daily loads and job-site payload: the 2.7L TurboMax
  • Frequent heavy towing: the 5.7L V8
  • Long highway trips with a trailer: the Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel with Super Cruise
  • Maximum gasoline output: the 6.6L V8

Each pick is a distinct answer to a distinct workload, so there is no overlap to untangle before you decide.

Choosing Your 2027 Silverado 1500 Engine

The 2027 Silverado 1500 lines up four engines with four jobs: TurboMax for payload and daily work, the 5.7L V8 for heavy towing, the Duramax for long highway miles, and the 6.6L V8 for gasoline power. Super Cruise adds hands-free driving to trailer trips.
